Life-size reconstructions of Ice Age animals, including woolly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers, are making their way from China to the Móra Ferenc Museum in Szeged, the institution announced in a press release this week.
The realistic models — among them animatronic mammoths and skeletal replicas of a cave bear, a cave lion, and a giant ground sloth — are currently aboard a cargo ship near the coast of Vietnam. The shipment is expected to arrive in Europe in the coming weeks, after a journey of several thousand miles.
According to the museum, the exhibits were carefully packed into containers by specialists before setting off by sea from China. The reconstructions will form part of the museum’s large-scale Ice Age exhibition.
The second phase of the exhibition is scheduled to open June 21 during Night of Museums, a nationwide cultural event in Hungary. Organizers say the exhibition will offer visitors an in-depth look at the climate, ecosystems and iconic creatures of the Ice Age.
