Casting call for “3 Musketeers” draws 260 applicants in Szeged

Nearly 260 hopefuls applied to join the cast of 3 Musketeers as extras in this summer’s Szeged Open-Air Festival, but only about 20 will make it to the stage.

Organizers held auditions Thursday at the Szeged National Theater, where 60 pre-selected candidates showcased their skills for choreographer Lajos Péter Túri. The group was narrowed down from a pool of applicants aged 18 to 40, who submitted photo résumés for consideration.

Túri, a Nívó Award-winning dance educator, evaluated the candidates in the ballet rehearsal room at the Szeged National Theater. Each participant learned a short choreographed routine and was asked to perform it in small groups.

“The competition was extremely tight,” organizers said in a statement. “The production team is looking for a small number of performers who can contribute to bringing 17th-century France to life on stage.”

The chosen extras will join rehearsals beginning July 30 at Dóm Square and must remain available through Aug. 19, the festival’s final rain date. The show, an original musical by Rob Bolland, Ferdi Bolland, and André Breedland, is directed by Vajk Szente and premieres Aug. 8.

The Szeged Open-Air Festival is one of Hungary’s most prominent theatrical events, known for its large-scale summer productions in the historic square.
