BYD’s share of Hungary’s auto market rises

Chinese automaker BYD has expanded its presence in Hungary’s new car market, with its share of the country’s electric vehicle sales approaching 14% this year, the company informed the Hungarian News Agency (MTI) last week.

BYD, which entered Hungary in 2023, sold 1,180 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the first eight months of 2025. With 141 vehicles sold in August, the company was the best-selling electric car brand in Hungary, placing three models among the top 10, according to BYD Hungary. The automaker also said its European lineup was expanded last week with the SEAL 6 DM-i, a hybrid model using its Super Hybrid drivetrain.

Electric vehicles account for more than 10% of new car sales in Hungary this year.

BYD said it plans to continue expanding its Hungarian operations, adding four new dealership partners by the end of the year, for a total of eight locations nationwide. The company said it entered 12 new European markets in 2025, and expects to operate more than 1,000 dealerships across the continent.

The automaker confirmed it will begin production in Hungary at the end of 2025 at its new plant in Szeged, starting with the Dolphin model.

Globally, BYD reported revenue of 47 billion euros ($50.4 billion) in the first half of the year, a 23% increase compared with the same period in 2024. The company said it holds a 21% share of the global new energy vehicle market, leading both the overall and fully electric segments.

BYD has pledged to cut its energy intensity in half by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

Founded in 2003, BYD Auto is the carmaking subsidiary of Chinese multinational high-tech firm BYD. The company began selling fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars in Hungary in October 2023. It is investing several billion euros to build its Szeged factory and has announced plans to establish its European corporate and research hub in Budapest.
