KÉSZ Group wins major water infrastructure contract tied to Szeged industrial area expansion
KÉSZ Építő és Szerelő Zrt. has been awarded a large-scale water infrastructure project connected to Phase II of the Szeged industrial area, following an open European Union public procurement procedure, the company announced Tuesday.
The tender for the early-stage water management facilities was issued by Hungary’s National Directorate General for Water Management. The joint bid submitted by KÉSZ Építő és Szerelő Zrt. and MA-HARD Hajózási és Vízépítő Kft. was selected as the most favorable, with a net contract value of 3.99 billion forints (about €10 million).
According to the company, the project is intended to provide a temporary drainage solution required for the implementation of the Szeged BYD project, while also establishing water infrastructure that will support longer-term industrial development in the area. The works are considered essential for enabling the safe and phased expansion of industrial capacity in and around Szeged.
The investment includes the construction of canals, attenuation basins, pumping stations and pressure pipelines, as well as temporary drainage systems and monitoring and control technology. The project also covers full design-related tasks, including the review of construction plans, preparation of as-built documentation and the permitting of related facilities.
As part of Phase II of the industrial area development, the contractors will build a nearly 2.8-kilometer-long northern ring canal, two large attenuation basins with a combined capacity of nearly 20,000 cubic meters, multiple stormwater reception points and pumping facilities, and sections of the eastern pressure pipeline. Existing pumping infrastructure will also be upgraded to accommodate the new system.
KÉSZ Építő és Szerelő Zrt. will carry out the project jointly with MA-HARD Hajózási és Vízépítő Kft., a Hungarian company specializing in water engineering and hydraulic construction. MA-HARD has previously worked on port developments on the Danube and Lake Balaton, large-scale river engineering projects, and specialized water-related construction and salvage operations.
The development is part of broader infrastructure works linked to the expansion of Szeged’s industrial zones and the arrival of large manufacturing investments, including the BYD project, which has been identified by local and national authorities as a key driver of economic growth in the region.
