BYD opened new electric car showroom in Szeged
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has opened a new dealership in Szeged, where the company is also building its first European car plant. Operated by Duna Autó, the showroom on Algyői Road is being described as one of the most modern electric car dealerships in Hungary.
The new BYD salon features a curved, 5-by-3-meter indoor LED wall – unique in Central Europe – and a design concept inspired by the company’s signature “organic” aesthetic, with no sharp angles and soft, flowing lines.
At Monday’s opening ceremony, András Sváby, Hungarian TV journalist and BYD brand ambassador, said he has been personally impressed with his own BYD vehicle. “I rarely have to refuel – my car easily handles my 70-kilometer daily drive on electric power alone,” he said, calling Szeged BYD’s Hungarian home, where production will soon begin.
Péter Ormos, CEO of Duna Autó Group, said the company first discovered BYD at Auto Shanghai, one of the industry’s leading auto shows, where the brand stood out for its forward-looking technology. Duna Autó opened Hungary’s first BYD showroom in Budapest in 2023 and has now expanded to Szeged.
“The story of Duna Autó has been about growth for more than three decades,” Ormos said. “We’re proud to be at the forefront of BYD’s expansion in Hungary and to have opened this new, state-of-the-art showroom in Szeged.”
Representing the city, Deputy Mayor for Urban Development Sándor Nagy said the new dealership reflects investor confidence in Szeged.
“The opening of the BYD showroom shows that dealers see potential in Szeged and believe in the city’s future,” Nagy said. “Until now, people here have known BYD as a construction site – from now on, they can experience the cars themselves.”
Maria Grazia Davino, BYD’s regional managing director for Europe, praised the showroom’s design and said she was delighted to return to Szeged, where she previously attended the city’s well-known SZIN Festival, one of Hungary’s oldest open-air music events.
“It’s fantastic that we can now build our dreams here in Szeged as well,” she said, referring to the company’s name, Build Your Dreams.
Davino added that BYD expects to be present in nearly 30 countries by the end of this year and plans to double its dealership network to 2,000 locations across Europe next year, in 2026.
The Szeged dealership, covering 430 square meters, can display up to 10 models and includes a 1,400-square-meter storage facility allowing 60 vehicles to be available immediately. BYD’s full Hungarian lineup is offered, from fully electric vehicles to plug-in hybrids featuring the company’s Super DM technology.
Duna Autó has already sold 50 BYD cars in Szeged through a temporary pop-up showroom in the Árkád shopping mall, where nearly 200 test drives have also been held.
Duna Autó said its goal is to make the new Szeged location a regional hub for the future of mobility.
