Cast of The 3 Musketeers takes the stage ahead of Dóm Square premiere
László Barnák, director of the Szeged National Theater and the Szeged Open-Air Festival, welcomed The 3 Musketeers production to the Dóm Square stage Thursday during a press event, as the cast and creative team prepared for the musical’s sold-out premiere on August 8.
With just over a week until opening night, the production – based on the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas and adapted as a musical by Rob Bolland, Ferdi Bolland, and André Breedland – is nearing completion after weeks of rehearsal in Budapest. The performance marks a major event in the Szeged Open-Air Festival’s summer program.
Though led by the Szeged Open-Air Theatre, the musical is a joint effort with the Erkel Theatre, featuring a diverse cast from several prominent Hungarian institutions. Actors from the Víg Theatre, Örkény Theatre, and the Szeged National Theatre join forces with performers from the Erkel ensemble.

Director Vajk Szente said the goal is to capture the vitality of 17th-century France and to bring Dumas’ iconic characters to life with emotional depth and authenticity. “The production is rooted in passion and loyalty,” Szente noted. “It explores whether individual and collective motivations can move in the same direction – or pull apart.”
Márk Ember stars as D’Artagnan, with Balázs Koltai-Nagy, Tamás Veréb, and Bence Brasch portraying the titular trio of musketeers. Pál Feke takes on the role of Cardinal Richelieu. Szeged-based actors Bea Borsos and Róbert Szegezdi appear as D’Artagnan’s parents, while Kristóf Poroszlay plays Count Rochefort.
The production’s visual design includes significant contributions from the Szeged National Theatre. Music will be performed live by the Szeged Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by guest musicians. Although the orchestra will not be visible during the performance, it will play from a location behind the stage.
Tickets for all performances sold out weeks in advance.
