Budapest International Documentary Festival to screen six films in Szeged
The Budapest International Documentary Festival (BIDF) will present six documentary films in Szeged from Jan. 27 to Jan. 31, with screenings and post-film discussions held at Belvárosi Mozi, organizers announced in a press release.
The selection includes documentaries from a wide range of countries and social contexts, taking audiences to Russia, Vietnam and the United States, China, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, and from the United Kingdom to Kenya. The films address issues such as state propaganda in education, family reunions across continents, late-life relationships, online dating culture, global inequalities in higher education, and the war in Ukraine.
The Szeged screenings are part of BIDF’s nationwide program, which each year brings internationally recognized documentary films to several Hungarian cities. The festival’s 2026 motto is “Your future film is already rolling,” emphasizing individual responsibility for shaping the future and the role of younger generations in that process.
The festival opens in Szeged on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. with the screening of Reward for the Rain. The official opening ceremony will take place at 5:45 p.m., with remarks by Sándor Nagy, Szeged’s deputy mayor for urban development. The evening program will continue with Mr. Nobody Against Putin, a Danish documentary that was nominated for an Academy Award last year.
Screenings will run over five days, with films starting at 6 p.m. each evening except Tuesday. Each screening will be followed by a moderated discussion lasting approximately 40 to 50 minutes, featuring invited experts and civil ambassadors. Organizers said audience participation will be encouraged.
Language note: All films will be screened in their original language with Hungarian and English subtitles. The post-screening discussions will be held in Hungarian.
Tickets and detailed program information are available on the Belvárosi Mozi website. Additional information about the festival can be found on the official BIDF website.
