Bus route 79 resumes service in Szeged to serve Rheinmetall factory

Bus route 79 has resumed service in Szeged to connect the city’s public transport network with Rheinmetall’s newly opened factory, following timetable changes introduced in January 2026.

According to a decision by the city management committee, the local government relaunched bus line 79 on Jan. 5 to support commuting to the Rheinmetall plant. The route had been out of service for nearly a decade.

Bus 79 operates between Mars Square, near Mikszáth Street, and the Rheinmetall factory, also serving the ELI Laser Research Center along the route. In January, the timetable is aligned with a single-shift work schedule. From February through the end of May, the service will follow a two-shift schedule, the city said.

The relaunch of bus 79 coincides with changes to other routes previously used primarily by industrial workers. From the end of January, routes 71A, serving Marostő’s Katalin Street, and 72A, serving Erdélyi tér, will terminate at Mars tér and will no longer continue to outer industrial areas.

City officials also approved the discontinuation of several underused services. Route 77Y will no longer operate between Mars Square and Baktó’s Völgyérhát Street, after passenger counts showed fewer than 10 riders per trip on average. Passengers on that section can use routes 77 and 77A instead.

Route 79H has also been discontinued. Travelers on that corridor can use local services operating on Route 5 toward Fehértói Halászcsárda with a valid Szeged pass or ticket.

While bus 79 provides access to the Rheinmetall factory, employees must currently walk a short distance from the terminal stop to the factory entrance. A closer stop exists at the site, but it has not yet been connected to the city’s public transport network.

The official timetable for bus 79 is available on the Szeged Transport Company (SZKT) website.
