Psychart24 Painting Marathon coming to Szeged next weekend
The 15th annual Psychart24 Painting Marathon, a nationwide community art event, will take place in Szeged from noon Friday, Sept. 26, to noon Saturday, Sept. 27, at the József Attila Study and Information Center.
Founded in 2010 by the Moravcsik Foundation and the Budapest Art Brut Gallery, the 24-hour art marathon brings together people with psychosocial disabilities and non-disabled participants to create side by side. This year, the event will be held in nine Hungarian cities: Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Békéscsaba, Kecskemét, Kalocsa, Miskolc, and Sopron.
In Szeged, the marathon is organized by the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Szeged. Each year, more than 200 people take part locally, producing some 250 to 300 works of art in the 24-hour period.
Organizers say Psychart24 aims to highlight the joy of creating art together, the value of artistic expression, and the importance of acceptance while reducing prejudice and stigma. Each year, hundreds of art brut and outsider artists take part, producing a wide variety of works.
A selection of the artworks, chosen by a professional jury, will be featured in a traveling exhibition opening later this year at the Budapest Art Brut Gallery.
The Psychart24 Painting Marathon coincides with the nationwide Researchers’ Night event.
