Szeged fireworks on Aug. 20: 5,000 effects and flame show to mark Hungary’s national holiday
Five thousand fireworks and light effects will illuminate the sky over Szeged’s Széchenyi Square on Wednesday, Aug. 20, during Hungary’s State Foundation Day celebrations, including ten-meter flame plumes, the local news site szeged.hu reported.
The holiday program begins Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Szeged, with the fireworks display scheduled for the following evening. The show will be launched from in front of the City Hall and from the courtyard of the building. Installation began Monday, with final preparations set for Wednesday.
Special flame machines will be featured in the display — devices not yet used anywhere else in Hungary. Traditionally, the fireworks are launched from the Huszár Mátyás Quay, but due to renovation work and archaeological excavations, organizers selected the City Hall’s courtyard instead.
“This year’s fireworks will last twelve minutes, with about five thousand effects lighting up the sky,” said Dániel Bácskai, chief pyrotechnician and managing director of Pyro Maxx Professional Fireworks. “The highlight will be ten-meter flame bursts. The flame columns will shoot in different directions and will color the sky in sync with the music.”
Bácskai said editing the music takes about a week, followed by another week to a week and a half of planning and logistics. His company has organized Szeged’s Aug. 20 fireworks since 1993. Approximately 10 to 15 workers participate in the three-day installation.
The fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. on Aug. 20, preceded and followed by a concert by Hungarian pop-rock band KFT in Széchenyi Square. The Aug. 19 program saw a last-minute change when singer Gigi Radics canceled her appearance due to illness. She will be replaced by her cousin, Gergő Oláh, reports szeged.hu.
