Szeged National Theater renovates grand stage, revolving platform after nearly 20 years

The Szeged National Theater has begun extensive renovations on the stage and revolving platform of its Grand Theater for the first time in nearly two decades, city officials said last week.

Work started June 12 and is expected to finish by mid‑August, in time for the 2025–26 season. The project includes replacing all 414 square meters of stage decking, overhauling the turntable mechanism, and installing new safety systems.

Deputy Mayor József Binszki said the city is funding the work with 43 million forints (about $117,000) from a larger development fund. Last year the main audience area was renovated, and this summer the second floor will be upgraded in parallel with the stage project.

The revolving platform — last refurbished in 2006 — had become deformed from heavy use, making it noisy and slow. Repairs aim to restore smooth, quiet operation.

Additional work will include replacing steel cables in the fly loft and installing an advanced audio and visual alarm system for fire safety.

The theater plans to fully complete the renovations by late August, ahead of the start of its fall season.
