Military band festival to bring free concerts to downtown Szeged

Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy free performances by military bands at several locations across downtown Szeged on Saturday, July 4, as four ensembles of the Hungarian Defence Forces take part in a day-long military band festival.

The event will open in the morning with the interactive Pöttöm Party children’s concert at the Roosevelt Square playground, where young audiences can meet musicians and learn about the instruments used by military bands.

Throughout the afternoon, military bands from Hódmezővásárhely, Kaposvár, Debrecen and Veszprém will perform 20- to 25-minute concerts at multiple locations around the city before joining in a ceremonial parade through downtown. The musicians will gather at Széchenyi Square before marching together to Móra Park, where the public can watch a military drill demonstration followed by a joint concert.

According to organizers, the military band festival will also launch this year’s series of free outdoor brass band concerts in Móra Park, a long-running summer tradition in Szeged.

The concert series will continue on July 11 with a performance by the Ferenc Fricsay City Wind Orchestra. The Band of the Hungarian Defence Forces Kinizsi Pál 30th Armored Infantry Brigade will perform the following week, while the Szentes City Wind Orchestra will close the July program with a concert in front of the Móra Ferenc Museum on the month’s final Saturday.

Another military band concert is scheduled for Aug. 11 at the Újszeged Open-Air Stage. The nearly 70-member Central Military Band of the Hungarian Defence Forces will perform a program featuring traditional military marches alongside wind band arrangements of film music and selections from popular musicals.
