SzegedPress exhibition opens at Móra Ferenc Museum

SZEGED, Hungary — A photo exhibition called “SzegedPress,” featuring a mix of press-style and other photographic work, including contributions from amateur photographers, has opened at the Móra Ferenc Museum, marking the first exhibition in the institution’s 2026 program.

A total of 50 photographers submitted 380 works for this year’s exhibition, an increase compared with the previous edition. A three-member jury selected 73 photographs for display.

The jury was chaired by György Németh, who also served as curator of the exhibition. The panel included András Bakos, a journalist with Magyar Narancs, and photographer Mihály Dömötör.

In remarks at the opening, Németh said the role of press photography remains the documentation of news events despite changes in the media landscape. He noted that while print media has declined globally, online platforms have expanded and tend to use a larger number of images. He also referred to the growing presence of artificial intelligence in online journalism.

Németh added that not all exhibiting photographers work as press photographers, but the selected works reflect the characteristics of press photography. He also cited estimates that billions of images are uploaded to social media platforms worldwide each day.

The exhibition in Szeged precedes the opening of Hungary’s national press photo exhibition, scheduled to open next week at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest.

At the awards ceremony, Róbert Révész received first prize, followed by Nikolett Tóth in second place and Csaba Vizler in third. A special prize, offered by the local award-winning press photographer János Török, was awarded to Tímea Ambrus in the nature photography category.
