The University of Szeged concluded its 25th Hungarian Studies Summer University, bringing together 63 participants from 14 countries for a four-week program in July-August, focused on Hungarian language and culture.

Organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Hungarian Studies Center, the intensive summer university offered language instruction at five levels, with daily 90-minute classes and afternoon practice sessions. Participants ranged from university students to retirees, arriving from countries including China, the United States, Iran, and Canada.

Beyond classroom study, the program featured cultural activities such as film clubs, folk dance, excursions, city walks and visits to Szeged landmarks including the synagogue, the Reök Palace, the Franciscan friary and the castle museum. The literary walk, presenting works by poets Attila József and Gyula Juhász, was among the most popular events. Former British ambassador to Hungary Iain Lindsay also visited and gave a lecture in Hungarian.

Running in parallel, a three-week Hungarian Language and Culture Summer Course brought students from the University of Manitoba. They spent one week in Budapest and two in Szeged, attending lectures in English on Hungarian history, literature, film, visual culture, music, cultural geography and theater history.

The summer university also welcomed students on Tempus scholarships from Prague and Warsaw, as well as recipients of the Diaspora Scholarship for participants with Hungarian roots.

In addition to international students, Hungarian master’s and undergraduate students specializing in Hungarian studies or teaching Hungarian as a foreign language joined the program as interns.
