Hungary’s second largest wine festival opens in Szeged
Bortér, a wine festival in Szeged, opened on Wednesday with a traditional harvest parade and crowds filling the city’s Dóm Square. At the opening, organizers said the event is now regarded as Hungary’s second-largest wine festival.
The five-day event features 120 wineries, nearly 20 food vendors, 30 craft stalls, four pálinka distilleries, and three craft breweries. The festival takes place on Dóm Square and the neighboring Aradi Vértanúk Square.
The opening parade began at Széchenyi Square and made its way through the city center before reaching Dóm Square for the ceremony. A horse-drawn carriage led the procession, followed by wine orders, folk dance groups, and locals who joined the march.
Bortér, now in its 13th edition, has grown steadily over the years and attracts large crowds annually. It is regarded as second only to the Szeged Wine Festival held each May.
The festival offers afternoon and evening concerts on two stages, along with a craft market featuring ceramics, jewelry, wooden toys, local foods, and handmade goods.
The event is cashless, and wine is served exclusively in glass cups, which visitors can either bring from home or purchase on site.
Bortér runs through Sunday, Sept. 21.
