University of Szeged and ContiTech expand partnership in research and education
The University of Szeged (SZTE) signed a cooperation agreement Monday with ContiTech Fluid Automotive Hungária Kft. and ContiTech Rubber Industrial Kft., aiming to expand joint efforts in research and development, education, and grant applications.
The agreement was signed at the university’s Rector’s Building by leaders of SZTE and the two companies. It formalizes a longstanding collaboration between the university and ContiTech’s plants in Szeged and Makó.
Prof. Dr. Zoltán Kónya, vice-rector for science and innovation at SZTE, said the university values its close relationship with regional industry partners and highlighted ContiTech’s 2012 SZTE Alma Mater Award as a sign of their close cooperation. He noted that SZTE’s new AI-focused supercomputer system will significantly support joint R&D efforts.
ContiTech Rubber Industrial Kft., a nearly 60-year-old operation, runs Continental’s largest European textile-reinforced conveyor belt plant in Szeged and is active in the development and production of specialized oil and marine hoses. The company plans to collaborate with the university on projects in materials testing, automation, process development, efficiency, and energy reduction.
The partnership will also include educational initiatives such as student internships, thesis supervision, and student research programs. Joint applications for funding from the European Union and other international and domestic sources are also planned.
“I believe this agreement lays the groundwork for a long-term, meaningful partnership – not just in name but in substance,” said Sándor Horváth, managing director of ContiTech Rubber Industrial Kft. “It’s a collaboration that can benefit not only our institutions but the entire region.”
SZTE also reaffirmed its cooperation with ContiTech Fluid Automotive Hungária Kft., with a focus on research, education, and joint innovation. Continental, the parent company, has been active in the automotive industry for more than 150 years.
“Our partnership spans a broad spectrum – from basic research to applied development, from introducing students to professional practice to innovative collaboration,” said József Hrubi, managing director of ContiTech Fluid Automotive Hungária Kft. “Our goal is not only to solve technological challenges but to create an environment where young talent can grow through hands-on experience.”
Prof. Dr. Ildikó Csóka, strategic director general of SZTE, said the agreement reflects shared values between the university and its partners.
“With this framework agreement, we’re forming a strategic alliance aimed at creating jobs in the region, offering practice-oriented training programs, and expanding student opportunities for internships and doctoral research,” Csóka said.
