Szeged’s Lapos Beach to reopen Saturday with new amenities
After a delayed start to the season due to high river levels and water quality concerns, Lapos Beach in Szeged will officially open tomorrow, June 14, at 9 a.m., city officials confirmed.
Edvin Mihálik, a local councilor representing the Újszeged district and an advisor to Szeged’s Green City program, said preparations have been underway for weeks. “Each year, we have to reclaim the beach from nature physically,” he told local media Szeged.hu, referring to the ongoing need to clear overgrown vegetation and repair shoreline erosion.
The city began restoration with work on nearby sports fields, followed by earthmoving efforts to make the riverside area safe and comfortable for swimmers.
The beach’s food and beverage vendor is ready to welcome guests with seating for 200, along with new additions such as canopy beds equipped with service call buttons, and upgraded benches and furniture.
Despite the postponed opening, residents have already begun flocking to the site, said Erika Kolonics, managing director of the city’s nonprofit event and media company. She noted that early attendance reflects the beach’s strong popularity.
Saturday’s festivities will include children’s arts and crafts, face painting, and live entertainment. A concert by Andi Kovács will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a Daytime House party running from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
