Book Week kicks off in Szeged with daily events at Dugonics Square

The 96th annual Festive Book Week and 24th Children’s Book Days officially opened Thursday in Szeged, with daily programs scheduled through the weekend at Dugonics Square.

The event was launched by city cultural committee chair József Kozma, who opened with a math-themed speech, and poet Dani Varró, who delivered a humorous welcome in verse. The square quickly filled with visitors browsing booths from local bookstores and cultural organizations.

Talks, book launches, and concerts will take place each day on the main stage. All literary talks and author events will be held in Hungarian.

The festival also awarded 2.5 million forints in publishing grants to local writers and named Krisztina Frauhammer and her team winners of the “Book of the Year” award for their work on the guestbook of early 20th-century art patron Ármin Tardos-Taussig.
