Szeged to host organ legends, international choirs, and open-air concerts this summer
From world-class organists to choral powerhouses and open-air concerts, Szeged is set for a rich musical season. Filharmónia Magyarország shared details of the upcoming programs at a press event held earlier today at their office on Klauzál Square.
One of the standout events is the April 26 concert by Olivier Latry, organist of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Known for his improvisations and wide-ranging repertoire, Latry will perform at the Szeged Cathedral as part of a national tour, offering works by Bach, Guilmant, Vierne, and Duruflé, capped by one of his signature free-form improvisations.
Szeged will also play a central role in this year’s Con Spirito Church Music Festival, which runs 8 – 15 June. The opening concert on 8 June at the Szeged Cathedral features Argentine tenor and conductor José Cura alongside organist Szabolcs Szamosi. The Westminster Cathedral Choir – regarded as one of the world’s leading Catholic choirs – will perform in Szeged on 13 June as part of a four-city tour in Hungary.
Looking ahead to the fall, Filharmónia’s long-running Tisza concert series – available as a season pass – will open its 2025/26 season in November. The opening program features Mozart works performed by the Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir, conducted by György Vashegyi. Other season highlights include the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra with pianist Dezső Ránki, a Puccini gala with the Szeged Symphony, and a spring finale led by András Keller and Concerto Budapest.
Summer music will also move outdoors with the Dómkerti Zenés Esték series, starting 19 June with violinist Júlia Pusker and the Danubia Orchestra performing Vivaldi, Mozart, and Schubert. Later programs include A Stylish Night in Pest – a nostalgic evening of film-era Hungarian songs with actor Iván Kamarás – and Moods, an ambient-classical crossover project led by composer Magor Bucz, combining music, poetry, and visual effects.
Organ music will have its spotlight too. The Organ Point summer series returns with concerts held in church venues nationwide, offering a unique escape from the heat. In Szeged, the 2025/26 organ season opens with a collaborative concert featuring organist Szabolcs Szamosi and pianist János Balázs. Later performances will feature international guests, including Philipp Pelster from Salzburg and Martin Baker from the UK.
Program details and ticket information will be published soon at filharmonia.hu.
