Two-story carousel now operating on Dóm Square as Szeged prepares for Christmas market

Hungary’s largest nostalgia carousel is now operating on Dóm Square after opening to the public on Saturday, marking a major milestone in preparations for the Szeged Advent (Szegedi Karácsonyi Hetek), the city’s annual Christmas market opening on November 28.

The two-story illuminated ride drew large crowds on its first day as families lined up to try it. The retro-style carousel measures 15 meters in diameter and 12 meters in height, and can accommodate up to 48 riders at a time. Adults may also ride on the larger horses and vehicles.

“It’s primarily for children, but many adults enjoy it as well,” said Attila Rácz, managing director of Szegedi Városkép és Piac Kft., the organizer of the Szeged Christmas Market. He said the carousel had operated in Keszthely for several weeks before being moved to Szeged.

A ride costs 2,000 forints and lasts about three minutes, with horses that move both forward and up and down. The carousel will operate on Dóm Square through January 11, 2026, alongside the Ferris wheel, before dismantling begins on January 12.

Installation of the square’s Christmas lights also began Saturday, while workers continued setting up the main Christmas tree and vendor huts. Organizers expect all structures to be in place by next weekend.

Similar to previous years, the Szeged Christmas Market will feature craft vendors, merchants, and food stalls. The market opens Nov. 28.
