Earthquake shakes Csongrád area, felt in Szeged

A mild earthquake shook the Csongrád area early Wednesday, October 22, and many in Szeged and nearby towns felt the tremor too, according to the Kövesligethy Radó Seismological Observatory, as reported by the Hungarian weather portal Időkép.hu.

The 4.1-magnitude quake hit at 12:50 a.m. local time (10:50 p.m. UTC). Residents across the region said they heard a loud bang or felt their homes shake for a moment. Some reported that beds and tables moved slightly, and glasses rattled in cupboards. Others said it sounded like a heavy steel door slamming, followed by a chorus of barking dogs.

Experts at the Seismological Observatory are now looking into whether this quake is connected to the smaller seismic events recorded over the summer or to any of the active fault lines identified in Hungary. More details are expected once the analysis of the event and any aftershocks is complete.

Based on posts on social media, the shaking lasted for roughly one second.

A seismogram shared by the Kövesligethy Radó Seismological Observatory shows a clear spike around 12:50 a.m., marking the sudden tremor and its quick decline.
