Traffic restored, trees planted on renovated Dózsa Street

Traffic has returned to normal on Dózsa Street after months of construction, with the city completing a 180 million forint ($470,000) renovation that included new road and sidewalk surfaces as well as tree planting.

The project originally focused on upgrading waterworks and pipelines, but officials decided to resurface the entire street after assessing its condition. As part of the work, ten elm trees were planted to help reduce heat along the north-south roadway, which is especially exposed to summer sun.

“Tree planting was only a small part of the overall investment, but the greening won’t stop here,” Deputy Mayor Sándor Nagy told the press today at the scene. He said the city plans to plant another 800 trees across Szeged this fall.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to expand green space and reduce the urban heat island effect, a growing concern as hot and dry periods become longer. Szeged also participates in several EU projects that map urban heat islands and develop climate adaptation solutions.
