‘27’ by Hungarian director Flóra Anna Buda wins Short Film Palme d'Or in Cannes

Hungarian animator, director, and writer Flóra Anna Buda has won the Palme d'Or for short film at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Her award-winning film, titled 27, is about Alice, who still lives with her parents and tends to live in her dreams to escape reality. On her 27th birthday, Alice has a bike accident when riding home drunk from a party. 27 was the only Hungarian film among the nominations at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. More than 4200 works were entered into the short film program of this year's film festival, of which 11 films were included in the shortlist selection.

At the moment, the 32-year-old director — who already won a Teddy Award for Best Short Film at the 2019 Berlinale with her graduation work Entropia — lives and creates in Paris. After being rejected three times by the Hungarian National Film Institute, the short film 27 was finally realized with French financial support.
