Summer beach season is on at Szeged's Lapos and Sárga
SZEGED, Hungary – The summer beach season is underway at Lapos and Sárga, two popular swimming areas along the Tisza River, with city officials highlighting recent improvements, recreational amenities, and seasonal programming.
The city has completed seasonal preparations at both locations, including shoreline maintenance, safety measures, and visitor amenities. Lifeguards are on duty at Lapos throughout operating hours, overseeing swimming along a designated 100-meter section of the riverbank.
Municipal officials said the city invests tens of millions of forints annually in maintaining the area. This year, approximately 30 million forints were spent on improvements to the shoreline, embankment, and surrounding terrain.
Lapos, which reopened for public swimming in 2021 after decades of closure, now offers outdoor fitness equipment, a small soccer field, a volleyball court, restrooms, showers, and free drinking water. Access to the public beach remains free of charge, while premium amenities such as sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent.
According to city officials, the beach has undergone significant development in recent years, with new features added each season by the site's operator.
This summer, visitors can rent newly installed umbrellas and sun loungers, while food vendors are offering both traditional beach fare and lighter menu options.
Lapos is also hosting a variety of seasonal programs, including health-related events, wine tastings, and community activities. FIFA World Cup matches are being shown on a large outdoor screen, allowing visitors to combine a day at the beach with evening sports viewing.
The summer season has also begun at Sárga Beach, where the city recently worked with a local civil organization to re-establish safe swimming opportunities in a section of the Tisza known for its clean water.
