Tamara Łempicka film screenings coming up in Szeged

A feature-length documentary about Polish-born painter Tamara de Łempicka will be screened at Belvárosi Cinema (Belvárosi Mozi) in Szeged on Sunday, Sept. 14, and Friday, Sept. 26, in connection with the exhibition The Queen of Art Deco, Tamara Łempicka, now on view at REÖK Regional Arts Center.
Update: Belvárosi Mozi announced a third screening for Sunday, September 28.
The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & The Art of Survival, directed, produced, and written by Julie Rubio, was released in 2024 in the United States. The 96-minute film, presented now in English with Hungarian subtitles, traces the artist’s rise to international stardom in 1920s Paris, her move to the United States in 1940 to escape the rise of fascism, and her later revival in the global art market.
The documentary highlights Łempicka’s signature style — high-gloss sensual nudes and striking portraits of Jazz Age high society — while also portraying the controversies that surrounded her romantic liaisons with her models and her indulgent lifestyle. The film presents Łempicka not only as the preeminent Art Deco painter but also as a complex figure who built her own survival and legacy through art.
Tickets cost 2,500 forints per person and are available online or at Belvárosi Cinema.
The screenings complement the current Łempicka panel exhibition at REÖK, which presents large-format reproductions of her multimillion-dollar paintings and runs through Sept. 28.
