International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme to launch at SZTE Báthory High School in Szeged, Hungary
Báthory István Practice High School, an affiliated school of the University of Szeged in Hungary, has been officially accredited to launch the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP). With this, the school has joined the global network of IB World Schools.
The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year curriculum for 11th- and 12th-grade students, recognized worldwide as one of the leading international secondary education programs. It is designed to provide students with a broad and rigorous academic foundation, global awareness, and strong critical thinking skills, while preparing them for university studies.
Based on the curriculum developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization, the program requires students to choose one subject from each of six groups: language and literature, language acquisition, mathematics, sciences, individuals and societies, and the arts. Students take three subjects at standard level and three at higher level. In addition, all IB students complete the core curriculum, which includes Theory of Knowledge, an extended research project, and community service.
At the end of the program, students take international examinations that are widely recognized and accepted by universities. Many foreign universities grant additional admission points for the IB Diploma, and in Hungary it is considered equivalent to the national high school leaving certificate (érettségi).
SZTE Báthory High School is the first school in Southern Hungary to be accredited for the IB Diploma Programme. Following eight schools in Budapest and two in Debrecen, it is now the eleventh IB school in Hungary.
The first self-funded class will begin in September 2025, with English as the language of instruction. Students will be able to choose from subjects including literature, German, Spanish, French, mathematics, biology, physics, history, visual arts, and film studies.
Applications are open to students completing the 10th grade in June 2025 who have strong academic performance, at least intermediate English proficiency, and an interest in global issues and intercultural perspectives. The program provides opportunities for skills-based learning and for developing the academic competencies required for university-level studies.
