Szeged’s next crowdfunded mural project focuses on underground biodiversity

A new community-funded mural is set to appear in Szeged, aiming to bring attention to the often-overlooked ecosystem beneath our feet: soil life.

The initiative, titled the Soil Life Community Project, will be painted on the outer brick wall of Daily Dose Café at the corner of Lengyel Street and József Attila Boulevard. The project is led by the Mondolo Association in cooperation with Daily Dose Café, Daily Dose Studio, and the Muralpaint artist collective.

The artwork will depict the complex underground world of microorganisms, fungi, and insects – elements essential to healthy ecosystems and climate resilience. The mural is designed to be educational as well as visually engaging, functioning like a large “seek-and-find” image that invites viewers to explore and learn.

“The project aims to make this hidden world more accessible to everyone and highlight the importance of protecting soil life,” the organizers stated in their official announcement.

The total cost of the project is estimated at 800,000 forints (approximately $2,200). Of this, around 670,000 forints will go toward artist fees and materials, while 105,500 forints will cover the design and production of a weather-resistant informational sign, supported by related online content. An additional 24,500 forints is set aside as a contingency fund. Daily Dose Café and Studio have contributed 150,000 forints toward the total.

Fundraising for the mural began on July 16 and will run until August 31, 2025. Organizers are collecting donations via bank transfer and Revolut. Supporters who contribute over 10,000 forints will have the option to have their name displayed on an on-site plaque next to the mural, as well as on the project’s website. Anonymity can be requested by donors in the payment note.

If the campaign does not meet its funding target, organizers plan to seek additional support from local businesses. The project may be postponed until full funding is secured. If this doesn’t happen, funds already collected will be directed toward the association’s broader mission, which includes environmental education and conservation programs.

The wall was offered by Daily Dose Café and Studio, and the visual concept was developed collaboratively by the café, the studio, Mondolo, and Muralpaint. The mural will be brought to life by artists whose striking large-scale works have already transformed public spaces across Szeged.

The project has received all necessary permits, and the team plans to begin painting as soon as funding allows.
