Szeged National Theater to stage Bánk bán in concert performance
The Szeged National Theater will present a concert-style performance of Bánk bán, Ferenc Erkel’s iconic Hungarian opera, on Saturday, May 10, the theater announced in a press release.
Tenor István Kovácsházi, a leading voice of the Budapest Opera, will star in the title role. Known for his powerful and nuanced portrayals, Kovácsházi’s performances of Bánk have earned critical acclaim over the years.
Soprano Krisztina Kónya will appear as Melinda, while mezzo-soprano Boglárka Laczák returns to Szeged to perform as Queen Gertrude. Laczák, who debuted in Szeged years ago, has since continued to develop her artistic voice.
The production will also feature members of the Szeged opera ensemble and guest artist Szabolcs Bognár. Tamás Pál, a noted specialist in Erkel’s work, will conduct the Szeged Symphony Orchestra and the theatre's choir.
Composed in 1861, Bánk bán is considered a national treasure of Hungarian opera. Set in 13th-century Hungary, the work explores patriotism, betrayal, and personal sacrifice as Bánk, a nobleman, grapples with the political turmoil and personal tragedy surrounding the royal court. The opera has long held a symbolic place in Hungarian cultural identity.
Organizers invite the public to experience the performance, which honors a cornerstone of Hungary’s artistic heritage.
