Students from 90 countries competing at IOI 2023 in Szeged
The 2023 International Olympiad in Informatics started on Tuesday, August 29, with an opening ceremony at the Education and Information Center of the University of Szeged.
The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), one of the major international student science Olympiads, is the world's most prestigious competitive programming event for high school IT talents. Hungary won the right to organize the 35th International Informatics Student Olympiad, taking place in Szeged between August 28 and September 4, 2023.
The number of participants — 360 competitors from 90 countries and around 300 international attendants — shows the prestige of the competition. The 360 competitors compare their skills on two competition days at the Pick Arena in Szeged in tasks such as problem analysis, designing algorithms and data structures, as well as programming and testing.
The opening ceremony included folk art and music performances focusing on Hungarian cultural traditions and scientific historical achievements. Video films presenting Hungary — including Szeged — and the Hungarian Nobel laureates were also part of the ceremony.
The competition is organized by the Neumann Technology Platform, the University of Szeged, and TechEd Hungary, with the support and professional guidance of the Ministry of Economic Development.
Hungary hosts IOI for the second time — the first International Olympiad in Informatics hosted by Hungary took place in Veszprém, in 1996. This year's event has a special significance, since it falls on the Neumann 120, the year commemorating the 120th birth anniversary of the famous mathematician and computer scientist János Neumann, known worldwide as John von Neumann.
