New MAN Lion's City CNG buses to be put into operation in Szeged

Ten new natural gas-powered MAN Lion's City 12 G buses will soon be put into operation in Szeged. Details of the buses' construction, characteristics, and procurement process were shared during a press event today at 11 a.m., in front of the Szeged City Hall.

"In the frames of the green city concept, Szeged considers the development of public transport of utmost importance, as the daily operation of a city of one hundred and sixty thousand people is unthinkable without public transport. According to this, the long-term agreement with Volánbusz requires the continuous development of the vehicle fleet, because our goal is that the people of Szeged can use a high-quality service." - Sándor Nagy, Szeged's Deputy Mayor for Urban Development said at the handover ceremony.

Tamás Németh, Deputy General Manager of Volánbusz Transport Company, spoke about how rising energy and fuel prices, and the European Union's expectation to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 are urging the company to put more and more alternative - primarily electric and CNG - powered vehicles into operation.

After the briefing, participants of the event could go on a test ride with two of the buses.

The new buses in Szeged have 27 seats and 79 standing places. Disabled access is through the middle door, leading to the central section of the bus, which includes a dedicated area for passengers with wheelchairs and strollers. The vehicles have onboard wifi, USB connectors, and surveillance cameras and both audio and visual passenger information are provided. According to the manufacturer, the MAN Lion's City G busses omit up to 97% fewer pollutants than their diesel alternatives are more efficient, and also more silent.

Two of the 10 busses will start operating from tomorrow, while the rest will join the Szeged traffic gradually.
