Szegedi Szabadtéri Játékok, Hungary's largest Open-air Theater Festival announces 2023 program and tickets

The 2023 program of Hungary's largest Open-air Theater Festival, the Szegedi Szabadtéri, was announced last week. The next season's repertoire was presented at an online press announcement by László Barnák, general director of the National Theater of Szeged.

In the summer of 2023, the Szeged Open-Air Festival awaits the audience with musical plays at Dóm Square, and a series of concerts will be played at the Újszeged Outdoor Theater.

2023 Szeged Open-Air Festival at Dóm Square

The festival begins on July 7 at Dóm Square with the gala Holdvilágos éjszakán (On a Moonlit Night), where the most beautiful arias from Hungarian and international opera literature and the audience's favorite operetta hits will be performed.

A week later Elisabeth, a musical by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Lévay, will be on show for three nights in a guest performance by the József Katona National Theater of Kecskemét, directed by Vajk Szente.

The Szeged Symphony Orchestra's bonus concert will take place on July 21. John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Bob Fosse's Chicago, directed by Attila Béres, will be on stage on the evening of July 28, 29, and 30.

The closing show at Dóm Square will be One Thousand and One Nights, a debut world musical by Péter Geszti, András Monori, and István Tasnádi. After the premiere on August 11, the brand-new show will be on stage again on August 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20.

Concerts at Újszeged Open-Air Stage

After the outstanding success of the previous year, the concert series at the Újszeged Open-Air Stage will return in 2023, this time with seven musical evenings. The Kossuth and Liszt prize-winner singer-composer Zorán will be the first to arrive on the Újszeged stage on June 28. This is followed by Ferenc Demjén's concert Ezzel még tartozom (I still owe you this), followed by an Omega memorial concert with guest artists.

Lovers of classical operettas and gypsy music will be entertained by the Get Up! concert on August 16, a joint production of Attila Dolhai, Marika Oszvald, Mónika Fischl, and the soloists of the Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra.

In the 2023 season, pop music comes to the Újszeged stage too. On July 12, Prima and two-time Artisjus award winner Bea Palya will entertain the audience with her unique songs rooted in folk music, followed by the unmistakable vibe of Kispál and the Lovasi's music on August 9.

On July 26, American guitarist Al Di Meola - acclaimed internationally for his nearly 50-year career in jazz fusion and world music - will perform at the Újszeged Open-Air Stage.

While theater performances at the Újszeged venue will be announced at the beginning of next year, tickets for the Dóm Square shows and the concert series at the Újszeged stage can already be purchased at the ticket office of the festival (6720 Szeged, Magyar Ede tér 2.) or online.
