Current world champion Shaoang Liu won the short track speed skating 500m in Beijing on Sunday, making him Hungary's first-ever individual gold medalist at the Winter Games.

The 23-year-old speed skater led a clean race from start to finish and came in first before Konstantin Ivliev (ROC), who grabbed second place, and Steven Dubois (CAN), who came in third.

This is Liu's third medal at Beijing 2022. Before the gold, he won two bronze medals, one in the 1000m and one in the mixed team relay.

“I feel exhausted. I am still speechless. I don’t know what to say, but maybe that’s what all the champions feel," Liu told reporters. "Obviously, I am very happy with what I have achieved. I am very proud of my team. I am very proud of my country.”
