Hungary public holidays in 2026: Full list of official national holidays

Hungarians will observe 11 official public holidays in 2026, according to the national calendar, with several key commemorations, Christian feast days and traditional celebrations spread throughout the year. On these dates, most state institutions, schools and many businesses are closed or operate on a reduced schedule.

The public holidays in Hungary for 2026 are as follows:

Jan. 1 (Thursday) — New Year’s Day, marking the start of the calendar year.

March 15 (Sunday) — National Holiday commemorating the outbreak of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence.

April 3 (Friday) — Good Friday, observed as part of the Easter holiday period.

April 6 (Monday) — Easter Monday.

May 1 (Friday) — Labour Day, traditionally associated with workers’ rights and public events.

May 25 (Monday) — Whit Monday, the day after Pentecost.

Aug. 20 (Thursday) — State Foundation Day, commemorating the founding of the Hungarian state and King Stephen I.

Oct. 23 (Friday) — National Holiday marking the anniversary of the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.

Nov. 1 (Sunday) — All Saints’ Day, traditionally a day of remembrance.

Dec. 25 (Friday) — Christmas Day.

Dec. 26 (Saturday) — Second Day of Christmas.

Several holidays in 2026 fall on weekends, including March 15, All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1 and the second day of Christmas on Dec. 26, meaning they will not result in additional weekday time off for many employees.

Public transport generally operates on a holiday or reduced schedule on these dates, while shops, cultural institutions and private businesses may apply special opening hours. Travelers and residents are advised to check local schedules in advance, particularly around major national holidays.
